Nobody's Lunch

Illustration, Work

The Civilians — an interesting New York-based independent theater company — contacted me about collaborating with them earlier this year. Their mission is to “develop original projects based in the creative investigation of actual experience.” Right up my alley. I’m working on a two-pager comix adaptation of a monologue from a previous show, Gone Missing, which I gather was well-attended and critically acclaimed. I hope to post that collaboration soon.

In the meantime, Civilians artistic director Steve Cossen asked me to draw the announcement card for their next show, (I am) Nobody’s Lunch (A Cabaret About How We Know What We Know When Nobody Knows if Everyone Else is Lying and When Someone or Something Wants to Have You for Lunch). Whew! (The show will run Jan. 19 – Feb. 6 at 59E59 in NYC before moving on to Philly and Cambridge, MA.)

As Steve put it, “The show is about the floating fear and paranoia in post 9/11-America, and that while the show’s subject is dark, our approach is eccentric and well, funny… So as our main marketing piece, the card should encourage someone to come have a good time watching a show about bad things. Basically — creepy in a fun way.” And then he mentioned that he wanted the card to feature a suspicious package, and a bartender who turns into lizard. (That’s a theme of the play, which I read and is AMAZING.) No problem! Oh, and the card is almost a foot long (and, yes, it’s supposed to be cut off like that.)

So here’s what I came up with:

Nobody's Lunch

Holding Court at Book Court

Publicity

On Tuesday, May 10, at 7pm, Sari & I will reprise our reading/presentation, this time at Book Court in Cobble Hill. With the aid of a projector, I’ll display a couple of stories from A Few Perfect Hours on a screen while we read them aloud. Last month’s Barnes & Noble event was really fun and drew a big crowd, and we hope to repeat the vibe this time around. If you couldn’t make it before, you’ll be able to experience the book in a new and entertaining way. And if you have yet to see A Few Perfect Hours, this is your chance to preview it. Afterwards, like last time, I’ll sign books, as well as the two new Harvey Pekar/American Splendor anthologies currently in stores.

Book Court, 163 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201, (718) 875-3677.

Barnes and Noble “Slideshow”

Publicity, Work

Just wanted to remind you about this Wednesday’s Barnes & Noble event:

Wednesday, March 16, 7:30-8:30 pm — Billed as a “slideshow/illustration demo,” stories from A Few Perfect Hours will be projected on a screen while co-star Sari Wilson and I read the stories aloud. Similar in method to the critically acclaimed Comix Decode and Carousel comics slideshow series, it promises to be an entertaining and unique way of experiencing the comics medium for fans and new readers alike. If you have yet to see the book, this is your chance to preview some of the stories. And afterwards, I’ll sign and do sketches.

Barnes and Noble Park Slope, 267 7th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11215, (718) 832-9066.

I hope to see you there!

A New Interview and an Upcoming Event

Publicity

Couple of things: an interview with me and Sari and an upcoming bookstore appearance.

  • The grrrl-power comics webzine SequentialTart interviewed me and Sari about A Few Perfect Hours. The interview is called “Poisonous Bugs, Crazy Farmers and the True Meaning of Enlightenment“. Hey, that title’s almost as long as my book’s!
  • On Wednesday, March 16, Sari & I will be doing a presentation/reading at the Park Slope (Brooklyn) Barnes & Noble’s. We’ll project pages from one of my travel stories onto a screen and read along. We’ll also do a Q&A and of course sign books for those who don’t have it yet. And I’ll sign copies of the TWO new Harvey Pekar/American Splendor anthologies, both of which feature work of mine. I’ll pass along more information as the event gets closer.
